From Metasynthesis to Reality – Bridging Systems Thinking and Practical Innovation

Philipp Osterwalder

How can we turn powerful concepts into transformative realities? How do we bridge the gap between theoretical systems thinking and concrete solutions that create lasting impact?

Join me for an insightful webinar exploring Metasynthesis – the integration of diverse knowledge, disciplines, and technologies to tackle complex, real-world problems. We’ll dive deep into:

The core principles of Metasynthesis and systems thinking
Real-world case studies (including Re-nut and Oro de Cacao)
How cutting-edge technologies (Machine Learning, self-learning systems, continuous processing) are critical in turning visionary ideas into sustainable innovations
Strategies to overcome the “valley of death” from theory to execution

The webinar by Tilo Hühn with 1LIMS Events addressed metasynthesis as an approach for practical innovation, emphasizing the importance of systems thinking, different forms of intelligence and sustainable solutions, especially in food production.  The balance between low-tech and high-tech, profitability and sustainability as well as the need for more flexible regulations were discussed.  Future webinars and the publication of the concepts presented are planned.

Details
Introduction and technical difficulties: The event began with a welcome by 1LIMS Events and Tilo Hühn (00:00:00).  This was followed by a brief introduction to the topic of "Metasynthesis: systems thinking and practical innovation" (00:04:45).  However, there were technical problems with screen sharing at the beginning, which took some time before Tilo Hühn was finally able to show his presentation (00:07:14).

Metasynthesis and innovation: Tilo Hühn presented his view on metasynthesis as a bridge between systems thinking and practical innovation (00:15:35).  He emphasized the importance of mindset, culture and strategy in the innovation process (00:17:15).  Hühn described a transformational model of leadership that encompasses different roles and phases of innovation, from best-practice utilization to the adaptation and integration of new solutions (00:21:44).

Intelligence and innovation: Hühn discussed different types of intelligence in the context of innovation, including automated thinking, contradiction resolution and social intelligence (00:32:16).  He mentioned the importance of neuromorphic technology and the development of machines that can perceive and interact with the world (00:36:14).  He presented the "Silver Revolution", which is based on metasynthesis and aims to find sustainable solutions for food production (00:39:01).

Sustainability and economic growth: The discussion also covered the question of how to reconcile economic growth with ecological responsibility.  Hühn argued against a pure focus on sufficiency, arguing instead for regenerative practices and the use of technology for more sustainable food production. He mentioned the need to balance profit-making with social and environmental goals as an important catalyst (00:57:54).

Low-tech vs. high-tech solutions: The question of whether the use of machine learning and automated systems is always necessary or whether simple low-tech solutions can sometimes be more effective was discussed. Tilo Hühn emphasized the value of both traditional and new computational tools and stressed the importance of critical thinking (00:53:05).

10 commandments of metasynthesis and future developments: Tilo Hühn presented his "10 commandments for the age of metasynthesis" (00:42:55), which shed light on the further development of food production and design. He described visions for the future, including individualized nutrition and overcoming the boundaries between biology and technology (00:46:33).  The Digital Food Business Week 2026 in Wädenswil was mentioned (00:50:52).

Sustainability and business models: Tilo Hühn discussed the challenges of combining profitability and sustainability in business models, particularly in the context of Patagonia.  They noted the influence of sustainability on consumer decisions, depending on wealth and regulation.  The need for a more flexible and agile regulatory system to encourage innovation in sustainability was raised (01:01:42).
